Unknown Weegee: American tabloids
On display until October 12, 2008 at the Milan Palazzo della Ragione, New York immortalized by the "legendary" crime photojournalist, Weegee.Over one hundred shots take between 1935 and 1945 in a city struggling to rise out of the Great Depression, to the anxious division of the post WWII American society.
Weegee captured the racial tensions, economic problems and war rationing in New York and Hollywood's glamour invasion of the 30's. The photographer created a new style: from the dramatic crime scenes, burning buildings and car accidents to images of daily life in New York with lovers meeting on Coney Island and socialites attending the Metropolitan Opera. Weegee didn't intend to document. He didn't intend to report. He simply relayed and confirmed the both essential and social hardships.
His subjects rarely face the camera. They are also caught off-guard in somehow rare moments. It could be said that they represent reality like a natural phenomenon, like the rain or a storm. Weegee never staged portraits and his subjects, mainly anonymous, even when signing autographs, star in unexpected situations. The artist is infinitely curious and, when looking, also sees the unnoticed.
